The process of urbanization, industrialisation and migration have led to loosening off the traditional methods of social control rendering an individual, vulnerable to the Stresses and strains of modern life. Incidences of teasing, group clashes, assault and impressive crimes increase with drug abuse.
Alcohol, cannabis, opium, heroin and Indian produced pharmaceutical drugs are the most frequently abused drugs in India. Addiction generally begins with alcohol, moves towards nicotine and gaanja considered as gateways to hard drugs. The menace of drug addiction has spread fast among the youth.
Changing cultural values, absence of parental love, increasing economic stress, to be accepted by the peers, experimentation, neurotic pleasure and dwindling supportive bonds are leading to initiation into substance use.
